ACF Professional Development Programme

ACF has published its 2009 Professional Development Programme (PDP) with over 20 seminars, workshops and training courses.

The PDP is sponsored by CCLA and six new seminars are on offer, as well as the events on core grant-making skills.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to monitoring and evaluation
  • Scaling up success
  • Commissioning research for impact
  • Using the media to maximum effect
  • Government funding

In common with all ACF events, these events are for funders and may not be used to seek funds.


Surviving and Thriving During a Recession: Perspectives from philanthropists, charities and advisers

EAPG present its first summer symposium, a half day event examining how charities and non-profits can not only ‘survive’ the recession, but emerge from the current crisis as stronger, more effective organisations.

The symposium will bring together a wealth of experience and expertise, with speakers including Geoff Mulgan, Director of the Young Foundation, philanthropist Dame Stephanie Shirley, the Government’s new Ambassador to Philanthropy, and a range of charity professionals, funders, wealth advisers and philanthropists.

The event costs £50 for EAPG members or £80 for non-members.

Networking time will be available at the drinks reception afterwards from 5.45-7.00pm.

Taxing Times for Philanthropy?

This European Association for Philanthropy and Giving (EAPG) roundtable will examine the tax reliefs and incentives for charitable giving and philanthropy in the context of the recession.

The discussion panel will include: Cathy Pharoah and Jenny Harrow, ESRC Research Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy; Richard Bray, Cancer Research UK; David Gold, Chair, A Glimmer of Hope (UK); and Julian Smith, Farrer & Co.

Discussion points will include:

  • The proposed changes to Gift Aid for higher-rate taxpayers, with perspectives from charities and private client advisers, and how they might be beneficial for charities or generate fresh challenges in recruiting major donors in the current climate 
  • Should the charity sector be pushing for new legislation, incentives or giving vehicles that offer major donors more options and flexibility 
  • What level of interest is there in developing new approaches for planned giving in the UK 

Non-members are welcome to attend one roundtable in order to judge the value of EAPG events first-hand.

Art for a Global Voice: Engagement, Empowerment and Education through Mandalas

The Asian Foundation for Philanthropy (AfP) invite you to hear about two volunteer projects:

Greater Noida: A poverty stricken area where Udayan Care, a centre for orphaned and abandoned street girls exists. The home forms a safe haven and provides formal and informal education for these children.

Mythili: AfP’s volunteer used Mandalas (patterns engaging the individual with the global world) to empower these girls to develop their self confidence and esteem through art. Hear her story, view mandalas and contribute to their ‘Global Voice Mandala’.

Access to Islamic Finance Conference

The conference, organised by the Institute of Islamic Banking & Insurance, GK Partners, and the British Library, will look at improving Islamic financial investment in UK businesses including ethical and social enterprises.
 
Seminars will look at different models that could improve access to Islamic finance for ethical & social enterprises, and at the links between social responsibility, sustainable business and Islamic finance;
 
The conference will also cover:

  • The principles and products of Islamic finance
  • The nature and size of Islamic finance investment in the UK
  • Case studies on business access to Islamic finance
  • Islamic banking and the challenges of investing in SMEs
  • Legal structures of Islamic equity and debt finance
  • Requirements of Shariah-compliant business plans
  • How to help clients access funds from Islamic finance institutions
  • Models for improving Islamic investment in the UK social economy

2nd Social Innovation Exchange Summer School

15 – 17 July 2009
Lisbon, Portugal

This summer school on ‘Recovery through Social Innovation’ will bring together leading practitioners of social innovation from all parts of the world

Their aim is to use the event to share ideas and experiences (on everything from job creation to urban agriculture, fast colleges to fiscal stimulus packages), while also taking stock of how the field is developing in terms of methods, financing models, public policy and uses of technology.

The event will be relatively small and is an opportunity for learning and collaboration – with plenty of opportunities for focused open space working and small group discussion.

There is a registration fee of €100 to attend the summer school. Please register by Monday 1 June.

Dine in the Dark

The Asian Foundation for Philanthropy (AfP) invites you to hear about the work of their partner organisation in India, Mitra Jyothi, which works with visually impaired people.

Dine in the dark will enable participants to experience:

  • Not being able to see the people around you
  • Being dependent on someone else
  • The world of a visually impaired person

Two AfP volunteers, Paresh, who is visually impaired himself, and Hiren, will talk about their experiences.

Tickets cost £25 and include a two course vegetarian meal and non alcoholic cocktail) and payable through justgiving.com/dininginthedark or cheque (payable to Asian Foundation for Philanthropy)

The Centre for Social Investment at the University of Heidelberg offers a masters degree in Nonprofit Management and Governance.

The master's programme aims to cover the specifics of leadership in the third sector focusing on such fields as strategy development, legal basis, governance and leadership.

The programme is designed to take four semesters. It requires a one-and-a-half year period of actual course attendence in Heidelberg plus an internship and exams. The number of participating students each year will be limited to 25.

This degree may be of interest to executives and prospective executives of non-profit organisations, foundations, cultural and educational institutions, charity organisations, development aid organisations, centres of economic and work life, NGOs and social enterprises.

International Social Innovation Research Conference 2009

14–16 September 2009
Oxford

The International Social Innovation Research Conference (ISIRC) 2009 at the Saïd Business School, Oxford University, will bring together the Social Enterprise Research Conference (SERC) and the International Social Entrepreneurship Research Conference (ISERC).

The conference will combine the strong focus on social enterprise in the UK with practitioner-driven content as well as an international academic conference centred on multi-disciplinary social entrepreneurship research.

The three day conference will have one day dedicated to UK-based research and two days of more international papers. There will be a separate stream running throughout for practitioner work and for work in progress and doctoral research.

The Opportunity Collaboration

This four-day networking and problem solving event beginning on world poverty day will be co-convened by MicroCredit Enterprise and the Aspen Network of  Development Entrepreneurs.

The event is intended to be a working business meeting about poverty alleviation and will have no panels or plenary speeches.
 
Exemplary projects, programs, social investments, etc. which have achieved ‘proof of concept’ will be showcased.

Business Strategies for Environmental Sustainability

The Center for Social Innovation introduces a pioneering new executive programme for leaders in business, government, nonprofit, and political action organisations. Drawing from a multi-disciplinary curriculum designed and taught by professors at Stanford Business School, this five-day programme delivers innovative approaches to advancing environmental sustainability across organisations.

Clore Social Leadership Programme

Jan-Dec 2010

The Clore Social Leadership Programme, established in 2008 by the Clore Duffield Foundation as a new initiative to identify and develop emerging talent in the third sector, has opened applications for its first group of fellowships.

Up to fifteen fellowships will be awarded in the first year and they will be announced in October 2009. The first programme will begin in January 2010.

Applications are open to any UK resident who has substantial work or volunteering experience within the third sector. Fellowships will last for one year, during which fellows will attend two intensive residential courses including a variety of site visits to challenging contexts, receive individual tuition and mentoring, fulfil an extended outplacement and have an opportunity to engage in reflection and research.

A bursary of up to £20,000 will be available to support fellows or the organisations which currently employ them. Direct associated costs, including tuition fees, will be met by the programme.

Five fellowships, co-funded with other organisations, will be dedicated to specific areas:

  • The NESTA Fellowship for a Fellow interested in developing practical solutions to gaps in the supply and demand for risk capital
  • The NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement Fellowship for a Fellow working within children’s or youth services in a role in direct contact with the NHS
  • The Office for the Third Sector Fellowship for a Fellow from BAME backgrounds
  • The RNIB Fellowship for a registered blind or partially sighted Fellow
  • The Youth Sport Trust Fellowship for a Fellow working in or with the School Sport Partnership network.

The closing date for applications is 30 June 2009, and interviews will be held between 7 September and 2 October 2009.
