Skoll awards unrestricted funding in challenging economic climate

By Ben Eyre, Added: 19 March 2009

Award winning social entrepreneurs will share $5.35m (£3.74m) of unrestricted funding from the Skoll Foundation.

The seven organisations that have won a Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2009  will receive three-year grants of $765,000 (£535,000), and join the global network of Skoll social entrepreneurs who are tackling the world’s most critical problems.

“Today’s difficult economic environment makes it all the more important to identify organisations that are tackling tough issues and delivering real and sustainable results,” said Sally Osberg, CEO of the Skoll Foundation. “Unrestricted funding is particularly valuable against the current economic backdrop, since it provides these entrepreneurs with the flexibility they need to adapt to such difficult challenges.”

The organisations are: BioRegional Development Group, EcoPeace – Friend of the Earth Middle East, Fundacion Gaia Amazonas, INJAZ Al-Arab, International Center for Transitional Justice, VisionSpring, and WaterPartners International.

The Skoll Awards will be presented by Skoll Foundation Chairman Jeff Skoll on 26th March at the sixth annual Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Oxford in England.
