    Prime Minister David Cameron launched the £600m Big Society Capital fund to a mixed response. Experts welcomed the funding boost to the social investment market but cautioned against seeing it as an immediate solution to the variety of funding problems facing civil society organisations.

  • Marathon tragedy strikes a £1m chord with online donors

    Extraordinary donor response to the tragic death during the London Marathon of 30-year old Claire Squires looks set to cement her philanthropic legacy, which will be guided by her family. Over £1m has already been raised for her chosen charity, the Samaritans. More than £900,000 has been donated through her page on online giving platform JustGiving (as at 3pm on Tuesday May 1st). This amount will be topped up by almost £200,000 in Gift Aid. Around 78,000 people have donated so far.

  • Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation creates £2.5m endowment for new MA in Buddhist art at Courtauld

    A £2.5m endowment donated by the Hong Kong based Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation will fund a new MA programme beginning autumn 2013 in Buddhist art and conservation at the Courtauld Institute of Art. It will be run in collaboration with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Buddhist Art: History and Conservation is based on the premise that the preservation of Buddhist art cannot be undertaken appropriately without an understanding of Buddhism itself.

  • Lindsay Boswell resigns as advisor to CGAP over research funding

    Lindsay Boswell, chief executive of the Institute of Fundraising, has resigned from the advisory panel for the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy because he says the research body will not pursue projects that ‘will help fundraisers raise more money’.
