    A new report from the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP), a US-based international corporate philanthropy forum of senior business executives, looks at the future for corporate philanthropy in the next decade and concludes that businesses need to ‘take an active role in solving social problems in a way that simultaneously delivers tangible bottom-line results (either by reducing costs or increasing revenues).’

  • Fall in charity legacy values softened by rise in number of legators

    New research has revealed that the value of legacy giving to charities fell by an estimated £57m in 2009 compared to the previous year, a 3% drop, despite an 8% rise in the number of people leaving money to charity in their wills in the same period.

  • New investment model gears donation value tenfold

    Leading national disability charity Scope has launched a new investment vehicle which combines donations, tax breaks, matched funds, soft loans and commercial loans so that each £1,750 donated will create a value to the charity of £18,000. The Grangewood Venture Philanthropy Project (GVPP) was developed with the advice and input of Scope supporters familiar with the world of private equity and aims to raise £1.8m.

    The new coalition government’s plans to strengthen civil society through its Big Society programme are beginning to take shape, though it is clearly no longer top of the agenda. This week, the Queen’s speech reaffirmed the commitment to implementing the Big Society proposals, while also recognising that the government’s first priority was to reduce the budget deficit as quickly as possible.     Hong Kong based Chinese billionaire businessman and K.B.E. Sir Ka-shing Li is donating £5m to Oxford University, which adds to the £800m already raised by the Oxford Thinking campaign, taking it closer to its £1.25bn target.
