  • Big Society Bank one step closer as government endorses outline proposals

    On 9 May the Big Society Bank took a significant step as Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office,endorsed outline proposals for its development by  Independent Advisors Sir Ronald Cohen and Nick O’Donohoe. He also announced the formation of an Investment Committee comprising six experts in social and financial investment to “provide support to social investment organisations enabling them to increase their capability”. The Committee members are:

  • CDFA receives £60m to stimulate small community business

    The government has made the largest investment ever in the Community Development Finance Association (CDFA), in an attempt to stimulate private sector-led growth in the economy. The Regional Growth Fund scheme has awarded a £30m grant over three years to the CDFA. This will be matched by £30m of finance from two high street banks.

  • New government £125m Education Endowment Fund employs venture philanthropy principles

    Venture philanthropy organisation Impetus Trust is partnering with education charity The Sutton Trust to administer a new government backed £125m Education Endowment Fund (EEF). The EEF was established by the Secretary of State for Education and aims to boost attainment of some of the country's most disadvantaged children. The “one-off, arms-length“ grant was awarded through an open application process involving 14 other bidders.

    Company giving in the UK remained steady as a percentage of pre-tax profits but fell significantly in value terms, with an increasing amount of donations being made in-kind, according to new research from the Directory for Social Change (DSC).

    Consultation on the government’s Green Giving Paper closed on 9th March, with over 450 responses received. These will now be considered and feed in to the Giving White Paper, expected in May. The Paper itself has been welcomed by respondees as a recognition of the importance of giving and philanthropy, and some of its recommendations have been applauded. However, there is strong criticism that it does not address the call for more tax incentives or the need to provide means to measure impact.

    Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales has announced its income for the next three years will be £25.2m per annum. The Foundation was created 25 years ago, and since then has invested £297m in 42,000 charities.
