    The main street in União Baiana
    The main street in União Baiana, a village that has been supported by the Institute for Development and Social Investment.
    Since the arrival of European explorers in 1500, Brazilian philanthropy has been inspired by the Catholic Church. As a result, philanthropy became linked with the ideas of charity and mercy: giving to the poor was motivated by their misery and used by givers as a means of gaining forgiveness.
