  • JustGiving reaches £1bn mark

    Twenty million donors have sponsored friends and family through the website JustGiving.com over the last ten years, raising over £1bn for more than 13,000 charities. Meanwhile, VirginMoneyGiving.com announced that it has reached the £100m mark since its launch in 2009. It was launched to coincide with becoming the official fundraising website for the London Marathon. Since then, VirginMoneyGiving.com has seen Gift Aid applied to 85.5% of donations made through the site.

  • Universities boost donor numbers by 10%

    The total number of donors who gave to universities in 2010-11 was 204,250, an increase of 10% since 2009-10 and 24% since 2008-9. UK universities received £560m in philanthropic cash income in 2010-11, up from £517m in 2009-10. Ten per cent of the cash income came from legacies in 2010-11, according to this year's Ross-CASE survey report, Giving to Excellence: generating philanthropic support for UK Higher Education 2010-2011, based on figures compiled by the National Centre for Social Research.

    Four British institutions to benefit from Brazilian philanthropist Brazilian philanthropist Lily Safra has chosen four British organisations as well as 16 others across the world to benefit from an auction of 70 pieces of her jewellery collection at Christie’s in Geneva on 14 May. The auction is expected to raise $20m (£12.6m)

    UK cash machine network LINK plans to enable users to make charitable donations through any of its 64,500 nationwide ATM sites before the end of the year. LINK head of development Graham Mott said:“With more than 10 million LINK ATM transactions a day, this is a real opportunity to raise significant sums of money for good causes. LINK cash withdrawals can exceed £10bn per month in value and at its busiest the company processes over one million transactions an hour."

    Social investment scheme to link business and local community Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and insurance company Legal and General are set to launch a social investment scheme backed by £65k of NESTA funding.    A pilot will be run in Brighton & Hove and if successful will be replicated in cities across the UK, encouraging local companies to invest time and money to support social enterprises.

    Scottish philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter is investing in the expansion of a not-for-profit initiative to help aspiring entrepreneurs in Ayrshire. The initiative, Entrepreneurial Spark, first launched four months ago in Glasgow and is now being expanded to Ayrshire.

    Artists Antony Gormley, Gillian Wearing, Tracey Emin, Sir Anthony Caro and Jonathan Yeo have donated work that is on display at Somerset House in London and will be auctioned for charity on April 22. The proceeds will go to support Crisis, which focuses on taking action to end homelessness. Most of the artists have created new pieces specifically for the show, reflecting on themes of homelessness such as isolation, poverty, mental illness, property and safety.

    Grameen Bank founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus has brought his microcredit concept to the UK to address some of the most entrenched poverty here, beginning in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, believing "if it works there it can work anywhere" .
