Charity lending continues to grow despite credit crunch
While other financial institutions were tightening their belts the social investment bank Triodos more than doubled its lending in 2007.
Newly released figures show the bank lent £33m to charities and social enterprises in 2007, more than double the total for 2006. Triodos now lends over £65m to the sector in the UK.
“The result is a real indicator of the sector’s growing economic significance and the powerful impact charities and social enterprises have in their communities,” said Sue Cooper, senior manager of Triodos’s social banking team.
New borrowers in 2007 included Sanford Housing Co-operative in London, which has completed an environmentally friendly revamp with the support of a Triodos Bank loan.
“Our refurbishment has been a major project to manage, and securing funding from Triodos Bank has been a crucial part of a large jigsaw,” says Sanford Support Officer Mark Langford.
