The ground-breaking work of organisations in the UK towards addressing fuel poverty, cutting carbon emissions and making renewable energy more accessible have been recognised at the annual Ashden Awards ceremony.
With increasing panic over fuel prices and concern over climate change, the inspiration of different UK organisations - within the categories of Local authority, Schools, Business, and Charity and Community - were recognised at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 19th June alongside international winners.
The winners included:
- Leeds City Council – which saves around 88,000 tonnes a year of CO2 through its energy efficiency work
- Ringmer Community College – which saves over £14,000 a year through energy saving and using renewable energy
- Kensa Engineering Ltd – which manufactures easy-to-install heat pumps
- Global Action Plan – which trains workplace teams to get energy-saving messages across to over 86,000 employees
The Ashden Awards works to increase the use of sustainable energy worldwide by publicising and rewarding leading sustainable energy programmes. Sarah Butler-Sloss, the Awards’ founder, said: “Each winner can be proud of their work to safeguard our shared future. We hope they can inspire others… to follow the sustainable energy path.”
Currently around 40% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions come from heating, lighting and powering buildings, and around 4.5m people are living in fuel poverty, a figure that continues to grow.
