GlobalGiving launches in the UK
GlobalGiving launched its UK website on 15th September to allow donors in the UK to give directly to hundreds of grassroots charity projects in over 70 countries.
Donors can choose from 500 projects around the globe, and can search by country or cause, such as economic development, health, or women and girls. The projects are screened and selected by GlobalGiving, which provides donors with regular progress reports from project leaders so that donors can see the impact of their donations.
Sharath Jeevan, chief executive of GlobalGiving UK, said, “We are excited about enabling a wide range of UK-based overseas development charities to raise valuable funds and awareness for their work. These funds can come from new donors arriving at our website, or from existing donors who want to give to a specific project of a charity they already admire or support.”
Minister for International Development Shahid Malik MP became the first official UK supporter. He donated to a project providing radios to educate orphaned Rwandan children.
Malik said, “GlobalGiving.co.uk really highlights the diversity and complexity of international development challenges and the potential solutions, as well as the impact an individual here in the UK can make.”
GlobalGiving US has generated more than $12m (£6.5m) to fund over 1,000 projects since it was established in 2001.
