Volunteers' Week 2009 to challenge perceptions of volunteering
The work of more than 22 million volunteers across the UK, who give time freely to a huge range of causes and activities, will be celebrated during Volunteers’ Week 2009.
A UK-wide initiative co-ordinated by Volunteering England, Volunteers’ Week 2009 includes 30 volunteer-involving organisations who will seek to challenge the perception of the charitable act and encourage people new to volunteering to get involved.
To run 1-7 June, the Week will also mark Volunteering England’s 25th birthday.
“Volunteers’ Week is a timely opportunity to make even more people aware of the benefits of volunteering and give it a try,” said Justin Davies Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England. “No matter who you are or what your interests are, we think there is a volunteering opportunity which is right for you.”
The Volunteers’ Week website has more information for the public on areas of volunteering ranging from health to international development, arts and sport.
In other volunteering news, Baroness Julia Neuberger has announced that she will step down as the government’s special advisor on volunteering before the build-up to the next general election.
