Funders strongly represented on new Charity Commission for Northern Ireland
Two funders have been appointed to the first ever Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.
The new Chief Commissioner who will chair the Commission is Mr Thomas McGrath, former chair of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
Patricia Sloan, director of BBC Children in Need, has been appointed as Deputy Chief Commissioner, and Walter Rader, chief executive of the Big Lottery Fund in Northern Ireland, will be one of four charity commissioners. Both organisations are Association of Charitable Foundations members.
“The Commissioners bring with them an array of skills and experience in the statutory, private and charitable sectors and I am confident that they can make a valuable contribution,” said Margaret Ritchie MLA, Social Development Minister. “This new body will have considerable powers under the act to regulate, monitor and where required, investigate charities.”
The introduction of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland aims to establish:
- a clear definition of what a charity is
- a register of all charities operating in Northern Ireland
- a test of what is and isn’t a charity
- a charity regulator – the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland
