Madejski wins prestigious Philanthropist of the Year award
Sir John Madejski has been named Philanthropist of the Year by Spear’s Wealth Management Survey, a quarterly magazine for high-net-worth individuals.
Madejski is the sponsor of the John Madejski Academy, which offers state-of-the-art learning facilities to 11-18 year-old students in South Reading. He is also the chairman of Reading Football Club and chancellor of Reading University.
The judges were Josh Spero, senior editor, Spear's magazine; William Cash, editor-in-chief, Spear's magazine; John Arlidge of The Sunday Times; Alessandro Tome of Anchor Asset Management; Nicholas Foulkes, journalist and social commentator; and Anthony Haden-Guest, arts editor, Spear's magazine.
Spero said, “Sir John Madejski was an easy choice: his gifts have been well-documented and his philanthropy has been sustained and generous over many years, from the Garden at the Victoria and Albert Museum to the Fine Rooms at the Royal Academy to a lecture theatre at the University of Reading.”
Also nominated for the award, sponsored by Spencer-Churchill Miller, were Arpad ‘Arki’ Busson, founding chairman of Absolute Return for Kids (ARK); Sir Ronald Cohen, chair of Bridges Community Ventures and Lord David Sainsbury, head of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, a member of the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF).
