First £1m success for Will Aid
Charity will-writing campaign, Will Aid, has raised more than £1m in donations and Gift Aid, with money still being collected.
Over 9,000 people used the scheme during November 2009 to write their Will, donating £1,048,967. They also promised over £5.3m in legacies to the nine Will Aid charities – ActionAid, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Help the Aged, NSPCC, Save the Children UK, Sightsavers International, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N. Ireland). The total raised in 2008, including Gift Aid, was £976,248.
Shirley Marsland, Will Aid campaign manager, said: “Will Aid is now the UK’s Make a Will Month and will run every November. Will Aid donations are shared by the nine partner charities, but people are free to leave a legacy to the charity of their choice. We would like to invite other charities to promote the campaign to their own supporters to encourage them to make a Will and hopefully, as a result, increase the charity’s legacy income.”
Each November Will Aid enlists solicitors across the UK who volunteer to draw up basic wills, giving clients the opportunity to make a donation to Will Aid rather than paying the solicitor’s usual fee.
