World Giving Index shows UK is fifth most charitable nation
The UK has become the fifth most generous nation in the world, according to the World Giving Index, published by the Charities Aid Foundation, moving up three places on last year.
Generosity is calculated based on people’s responses to three questions:
Have you done any of the following in the past month?
· Donated to charity
· Volunteered your time to an organisation
· Helped a stranger, or someone you didn’t know who needed help
CAF’s annual survey, ranking different nation’s generosity, shows that the USA is the most generous country, followed by Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
In terms of the amount of people giving, Thailand is the most generous nation with 85% of people donating to charity each month with the UK second with 80% of people saying they gave in the previous month.
CAF chief executive John Low said: "It is amazing that even during these tough economic times an overwhelming majority of the UK population gives to charity each month."
The World Giving Index is put together by CAF using Gallup polling information on the charitable behaviour of people in 153 nations. The polls used a sample of more than 150,000 people – representing 95%of the global population.
However, this report does not provide actual amounts given. Figures from CAF’s annual survey of giving UK Giving 2011 show that actual amounts given have remained static at £11bn. To download a free copy of the report click here
