New government £125m Education Endowment Fund employs venture philanthropy principles

Venture philanthropy organisation Impetus Trust is partnering with education charity The Sutton Trust to administer a new government backed £125m Education Endowment Fund (EEF). The EEF was established by the Secretary of State for Education and aims to boost attainment of some of the country's most disadvantaged children. The “one-off, arms-length“ grant was awarded through an open application process involving 14 other bidders.

Micro-donation channels are proving a real draw for donors and starting to raise philanthropic sized sums of money; For example, the charity Pennies, which works as an electronic charity box, has received over 250,000 consumer donations since its launch four months ago

Company giving remains static while proportion of in-kind donations grows

Company giving in the UK remained steady as a percentage of pre-tax profits but fell significantly in value terms, with an increasing amount of donations being made in-kind, according to new research from the Directory for Social Change (DSC).

BT’s new fundraising platform myDonate will pass 100% of donations to charity

BT is hoping to expand the online giving market via the launch of its web fundraising offering myDonate, which joins the growing number of online marketplaces such as JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving, but is the first to offer the service for free.

Philanthropists must become more tech savvy to achieve greater social impact, says US report

That is the conclusion of a new US report “Amplifying Social Impact in a Connected Age,”  from ZeroDivide that works to build technology capacity in underserved communities.

100 executive volunteers pledge to support non-profit boards

One hundred of the world’s top industry leaders have this week signed up to ‘The Palindrome Pledge’: a public commitment to donate their skills and knowledge to the boardrooms of the global non-profit sector with the aim of addressing pressing business and management needs. Palindrome Advisors' founder and chairman, entrepreneur, angel investor and philanthropist Zaw Thet says this new initiative “will disrupt the non-profit sector and create new, innovative ways for business leaders to contribute.”

‘Philanthropy vacuum’ may result if government fails to incentivise donors, says report

In the week that Arts Council England (ACE) made "agonising and painful decisions" in passing on overall government budget cuts of 15%, resulting in 200 organisations losing their grants, cultural think tank Arts Quarter released the findings of its sector-wide consultation on the ‘Philanthropy in the Arts’ agenda as announced by Culture  Secretary Jeremy Hunt in December 2010.
