Non-profit journalism should become a focus for European funders, says Active Philanthropy

In the last decade US foundations have funded a $1bn journalistic revolution in a bid to safeguard democracy threatened by a decline in local quality media and investigative journalism. And the hope, says Michael Alberg-Seberich of Berlin-based Active Philanthropy, is the movement will spread to Europe.

Global Irish philanthropists respond to campaign to help Ireland's charities

A campaign to raise €70m (£63m) by 2014 for Ireland’s charities from philanthropists across the world who have Irish connections is set to reach its target ahead of time. The Ireland Funds charitable foundation has already hit the €50m (£45m) mark.

Sir Terence Conran makes £17.5m gift to create world leading Design Museum

World-renowned designer Sir Terence Conran has announced that he is giving cash and donations in kind totalling £17.5m to the Design Museum, helping them to create the world’s leading museum of contemporary design and architecture at the site of the old Commonwealth Institute in London.

£40m fund to boost private giving to the Arts announced by ACE

A £40m funding package aimed at boosting private giving to the Arts has been announced by Arts Council England (ACE) and makes up part of a broader package to be announced by culture secretary Jeremy Hunt on Monday (July 4th). The £40m ‘Catalyst Arts’ fund will help build long-term resilience of arts organisations by increasing their fundraising potential and is part of the £80m scheme to boost philanthropy to the arts announced last December by Hunt.

Consultation on new tax breaks for major art donations launches

After much call from the sector, the government has published proposals for consultation on a new scheme to encourage people to donate pre-eminent objects or works of art to the nation by offering tax incentives.  Treasury consultation suggests relief from income tax, capital gains tax and even corporation tax for the year when 'pre-eminent' objects are given to the nation, based on a set percentage of the value of the object they are donating.

Rise in US giving bodes well for UK

Charitable giving in the US rose last year — in real dollars — for the first time in three years, a new report finds. In 2010, total charitable giving amounted to $290.9bn, up from the revised $280.4 billion in 2009, according to the Giving USA Foundation and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. That 3.8% increase in current dollars — 2.1% in inflation-adjusted dollars — hints at a slow rebound from the recession, the researchers said in a release.
