Tributes confirm Olga Alexeeva as visionary leader of global philanthropy

Olga Alexeeva
Tributes are pouring in from across the globe to Olga Alexeeva, whose sudden death on July 19 has left the philanthropy sector reeling. Alexeeva had made a profound contribution to philanthropy working at its cultural edge establishing and developing philanthropy in emerging nations such as Russia and Brazil. Equally she made a huge and lasting impact on those she met at a personal level. Her death leaves an ‘unfillable void’ say her colleagues and friends.

Launch of renamed Big Society Bank will change world, says Maude

Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude calls today’s launch (Friday July 29th)  of the Big Society 'Bank' a ‘world changing moment’. It will be known as Big Society Capital (BSC) and its first investment from dormant accounts is an in principle award of up to £1m to the Private Equity Foundation that supports disadvantaged young people into employment, education or training.

£10m OCS fund to create more social investment opportunities

The government’s announcement of a £10m fund to help charities and social enterprises develop the skills and infrastructure to win more capital investment and public service contracts is welcome, but may not go far enough says Paul Cheng, head of Charities Aid Foundation’s social investment fund CAF Venturesome.

People will not be 'nudged' into giving to charity or volunteering without other incentives, according to the second report by the House of Lords inquiry into behaviour change. Its findings run contrary to an earlier government commissioned report on the power of nudge.

High street banks could help to increase philanthropy by £1bn a year, if charity bank accounts become widely available. The first major feasibility study of the integration of charity bank accounts into high street banking shows a strong appetite for such a service.

Corporate philanthropy more strategic Deloitte report reveals

Large companies are focusing more on in-kind donations, which fit their own business objectives, according to a report by Deloitte, the business advisory firm. More than just giving says that while corporate responsibility is still essentially philanthropic, it is becoming increasingly strategic. Factors which are being taken into account include the need to improve employee retention, attracting new markets and enhancing reputation.
