Victorian philanthropy examined in restored gallery of artist and philanthropist GF Watts

Victorian philanthropy will be re-examined at a symposium being held at the recently re-opened Watts Gallery that was restored with £11m worth of donations to its ‘Hope Appeal’ from groups and individuals including The Heritage Lottery Fund and trusts local to the Surrey gallery. The appeal, is named after Hope, the iconic image painted by social activist and philanthropist George Frederic Watts, who was considered the greatest painter of the Victorian age.

Tubney Trust shares its experience of spending out in new book

The Tubney Trust, whose founders Miles and Briony Blackwell  tragically died in 2001 three years after establishing the organisation, is publishing a warts-and-all account of spending out as it prepares to close its doors after 15 years of grant-giving.

Giving Forum winds up after 7 years

After seven years “keeping the fires of philanthropy burning in parliament and beyond” The Giving Forum lead by Lord Best is to hold a final event and celebration of its achievement on November 2nd at the House of Lords. Back in 2004, following on from the work of Lord Joffe and the Giving Campaign, the forum was established and has met regularly to discuss all matters related to giving, to share knowledge and on occasion to call ministers and others to account.

Fundraisers should value philanthropy for its own sake says report that calls for end to payroll giving

A new report has highlighted the need for fundraisers to better understand the needs of philanthropists if they wish to grow philanthropy and encourage more giving to charity. It says charities need “to accept the value of philanthropy for philanthropy’s sake, as an end itself, not just a means to achieve their mission.”

Research portal to provide evidence for funders

The Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) has launched a new resource for philanthropists who want to find or share research on the third sector. The Third Sector Knowledge Portal is a one-stop shop for evidence on a range of subjects including funding, social impact and policy. TSRC’s knowledge broker, Naomi Landau says: “Funders may find useful detailed case studies, research papers or mapping studies that help them build a more detailed picture of the area of work they are funding.”

Philanthropy may be used to help organisations survive, says new shadow minister

Gareth Thomas, the new shadow minister for civil society, says government cuts to public funding “risk seeing philanthropic donations being used simply to help organisations survive”. He says this is a very different from Labour’s plans “to encourage philanthropy to help the third sector to expand”.

Government pushes on with Big Society initiative announcing two new grants

Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd sent an open letter to the voluntary sector last week, setting out the government's objectives for the Big Society. He said: "The Big Society vision is based on the argument that we have given too much power and responsibility to government and have too little to show for it . . . We believe that the country will be stronger if we as citizens have more power and responsibility to improve our own lives, the communities we share and the public services we use."

UK charitable foundations step up to the plate on international aid

UK foundations gave an estimated £290m to international development and related causes in 2009/10, a new study shows. The vast majority of the grants were made to civil society organisations in the UK and developing countries – equal to almost half the bilateral aid support given by the Department for International Development (DFID) to such organisations.
