Family foundation giving robust despite an 8.7% drop

Giving by the 100 largest UK family foundations may be down by 8.7% from £1.41bn in 2008/09 to 1.29bn in 2009/10, but it remains ‘robust’ compared to other forms of philanthropy, according to an annual survey.

Philanthropists should fund charities to measure impact, says think tank

Many charities find it too difficult or expensive to measure impact and philanthropists should do more to support them, according to a new study from think tank, New Philanthropy Capital (NPC). Development director Tris Lumley says: “The benefits of impact measurement hugely outweigh the costs.”

Major aid donors must be more transparent, says campaigning organisation

The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) is one of the most transparent donors in the world according to a new index published by Publish What You Fund, the global campaign for aid transparency. The index, the first of its kind, shows that the majority of international aid donors are not publishing enough information about the money they give, undermining the effectiveness of development spending and damaging public trust.

The European venture philanthropy sector is growing faster than expected, based on new figures that show more than €1.04bn has now been invested in social organisations. The European Venture Philanthropy Association’s (EVPA) first comprehensive survey of  European Venture Philanthropy was released at its 7th annual conference last week attended by 400 sector leaders.

Fundraising scheme Pennies has received its one millionth micro-donation in just 12 months, raising over £250,000. The scheme known as an electronic charity box asks consumers to round up their bills when they pay by card.
