"New Philanthropy", a term coined around 10 years ago to describe a new breed of business-minded City philanthropists with a highly engaged approach to giving is the focus of a new series on Radio 4. The series of three half-hour programmes How new is new philanthropy? first airing on Monday, December 12, sees historian Professor Hugh Cunningham present a history of philanthropic giving in Britain from the 18th to the 21st century, assessing the role that it plays or might play today.

New Arts Index shows decline in giving

There has been a sustained decline in private sector support for the arts, according to the first UK Arts index published by the National Campaign for the Arts (NCA). Business and individual giving fell by 17% and 13% respectively from 2007/8 to 2009/10 it shows.

Tax relief on pre-eminent gifts raised to £30m a year

An extra £10m for tax relief on gifts of pre-eminent objects to the nation was announced by the Chancellor in his recent autumn statement, taking the total relief to £30m per year. The aim is to stimulate lifetime giving. Objects can be loaned or given to appropriate institutions including certain charities and museums for safe keeping and to provide public access. In return donors will receive a reduction in their UK tax liability based on a percentage of the value of the object they are donating.

A white paper suggests that the use of mobile technology could revolutionise the way the arts are funded with more people becoming ‘philanthropists’. The increasing use of smartphones and social media channels provide a powerful platform to engage a wider range of donors, according to consultancy firm Panlogic’s paper entitled entitled We’re all philanthropists now.

New Gift Aid resource launches

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has launched a new Gift Aid resources website. The aim is to provide a full summary of Gift Aid and related issues for use by charities and tax advisors to philanthropists. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) pays around £1bn a year to charities and other qualifying bodies through Gift Aid.

Number of million pound donors down 15% on last year

The number of donors giving a million pounds or more fell by 15% from 201 to 174 and the amount given dropped from £1.5bn in 2008/9 to £1.3bn in 2009/10, according to the annual Coutts Million Pound Donor Report.

Giving remains ‘stubbornly flat’ with 7% of donors giving 45% of total

Although the proportion of donors who gave more than £100 to charity last year is just 7%, their donations account for 45% of the total amount given. This is a key finding in the latest report UK Giving 2011 as part of the long-running study of charitable giving, commissioned by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).

Donations under new scrutiny following Gaddafi gift to LSE

The London School of Economics (LSE) has said it will scrutinise all future major donations following a highly critical report on its acceptance of a £1.5m donation pledge from Saif Gaddafi son of the former Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi. The just-published Woolf Inquiry found serious failings of governance, management and communication in relation to the acceptance of a pledge from the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation.

City investor gives £1m to British Museum for Picasso etchings

In the week that the newly -published Coutts Million Pound Donors Report  shows donations are down 15%,  director of Mondrian Investment Partners Hamish Parker has donated £1m to the British Museum, allowing it to buy a collection of 100 Picasso sketches.
