Three major initiatives inspiring and celebrating generosity and giving, backed by major philanthropists, have announced themselves this week, perhaps making 2012 the unofficial year of doing more good. The initiatives call for action now in response to the growing need in communities among charities serving the vulnerable and poor. Mike Dickson, founder of Whizz-kidz, the action-orientated charity that has raised £75m to date to help 7000 disabled children become mobile, this week launched two initiatives:

New donors help climate change philanthropy grow

New donors are helping to boost environmental philanthropy by UK-based trusts and foundations, finds a report published by the Environmental Funders Network (EFN) today (Friday, January 27th). The report, Where The Green Grants Went 5 (WTGGW5), records a big increase in the proportion of environmental philanthropy going to tackle climate change, averaging 21% of green spend over the three years to 2009/10 - up from less than 9% in 2005/06 to 2006/07.

Call for more consolidated research on giving

A call for more consolidated research into giving follows the publication of two surveys that shows different levels of donations for the UK in 2011. According to a new survey from Investec, donations to charity dropped by 12% over the last year, while the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in its Giving UK 2011 survey says donations rose slightly from £10.6bn to £11bn. However, they remained static if adjusted for inflation.

IoF to promote giving more widely in new strategy

The Institute of Fundraising (IoF) plans to promote giving as part of its new five-year strategic plan but will not include donors in its research to find out what more it could do. It will focus on a consultation with members. A spokeswoman said: “We do see a role for the Institute in helping to increase giving more widely by equipping fundraisers to make the ask from donors in the best way possible, and we would like to see donors in the UK giving to their full potential.”

Philanthropy programme launches to educate advisors

In a boost to the philanthropy advisory sector, STEP, The Society of Trust & Estate Practitioner and EAPG, The European Association for Philanthropy and Giving, have agreed to work together to provide a jointly developed educational series for advisors. The Philanthropy Programme is underpinned by a programme advisory committee chaired by Lord Janvrin, non-executive director of HSBC Private Bank. It comprises five events and is aimed at providers of philanthropy and major charitable giving advice.

World Giving Index shows UK is fifth most charitable nation

Call for better co-ordination of overseas giving by foundations

Around £292m of UK foundation funding is spent on international development and related causes, representing 9% of UK grant-making, according to a new review. This amount is equal to just under half of the amount spent by the department for international development (DFID) through NGOs.
