According to a leading economist, donors bombarded with fact and figures about impact may actually be less inclined to give. Sir Howard Davies, former director of the London School of Economics and patron of Pro Bono Economics, made the claim to an audience of economists and charities in his lecture entitled ‘Why do people give their money away and how can we stop them acting so irrationally?’ at PricewaterhouseCooper’s London Bridge offices on February 7th.

Government calls on country to run one of the biggest youth programmes in the world

The government is calling on voluntary, business and public sector organisations to play their part in running National Citizen Service schemes across the country creating a market it says could be worth up to £110m by 2014.

Give More Campaign launches from BT Tower

The BT Tower became a philanthropic beacon on Valentine’s Day with the ‘pre-launch’ of the Give More campaign. Broadcaster and NSPCC Trustee Esther Rantzen pushed the button that saw the BT Tower light up with the Give More logo and the message for people “to give more time, money and energy” to good causes this year in a bid to get us all talking about giving.

15 giving innovations win funding from £10m government fund

The Cabinet Office and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) have made the first 15 investments to be funded from the £10m Innovation in Giving Fund which aims to find and back innovative ideas for increasing volunteering and charitable giving.

Government grants awarded to scale up successful projects Over £9m has been awarded to social action projects in England in the first tranche of funding from the Cabinet Office’s Social Action Fund. Minister for civil society Nick Hurd said: “The Social Action Fund exists to scale up projects that have proven their ability to inspire people and get them involved. These matched investments will create opportunities for many more people to make a difference to the things they care about.”

New research aims to capture impact of government cuts on charities

A survey of the top 750 charities aims to find out the impact of government cuts and new commissioning rules and ask if charities are becoming more reliant on income from the private sector. New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) launched the survey on February 8th. It will publish a report of its findings in late April/early May, including examples and case studies.
