Mission
To support innovative projects that provide educational opportunities for young people from non-privileged backgrounds.
Activities
The Sutton Trust makes grants to projects that provide educational opportunities for able young people from non-privileged backgrounds. The projects range from early years (0-3 year olds), through primary and secondary schooling, to further and higher education, including research projects, with an emphasis on innovative start-up projects that have the scope to benefit large numbers of individuals in the future. The Trust does not fund individuals or capital projects, and most funding goes to educational institutions.
Applications from other groups that organise formal education projects or undertake educational research are also welcome. The Trust only funds projects that are based in the UK, and project funding is usually provided for a maximum of two years.
For individuals
The Sutton Trust now accepts donations from other philanthropists. Individuals can choose to co-fund a specific project, or to contribute to the Sutton Strategic Philanthropy Fund. This requires a commitment of a minimum of £20,000 per year for a minimum of two years. The pooled fund is then used to support projects, and donors receive reports on the impact the funding has made. They are able to attend around six events a year, including seminars and networking meetings. There are currently 23 members of the Fund, which is approaching £1m.
